Choose Your Own Art Crawl Bus Tours


See the festival artworks with our curated selection of self-guided, half-day bus tours.

 If you want to see a bunch of artworks in one go, there are self-guided bus tours running out of three locations: Tokamachi Station West Entrance (the Information Desk side), Matsudai Station, and the Tsunan Information Desk (Naeba Brewery building). These buses will take you around to different works of art depending on the course you choose. These self-guided tours take about half a day and are a great way to fill your morning or afternoon! Many of the artworks featured on these tours are not easily accessible by foot or public transport. Some are brand-new, and others are popular, permanent favorites. This wide array of options makes the tours fun for first-timers and repeat visitors alike. Choose the course that best aligns with your length of stay and reserve now! Please note that the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022 Passport will be needed for these tours (sold separately). >> Spring/fall season (April 29th – July 29th; September 5th – November 13th) >> Summer season (July 30th – September 4th)

Reservations:

  1. Advance reservation from our website is required.
    During spring and fall you can reserve up to 4 days in advance. During summer you can reserve up to 10 minutes in advance pending availability.
    ・Pending availability, each course (except C) may be signed up for the same day, at the starting location itself. Cash is the only accepted form of payment in these circumstances. 
  2. We ask that you pay at the time of reservation.
    Credit card (Mastercard and VISA) are the only accepted forms of payment. For those wishing to make a cash payment, please call our office at 025-757-3345.
  3. You will be able to pick up your ticket(s) upon arrival on the day of your tour.
    ・Prior to picking up your ticket you will need to have your temperature checked from one of the many designated locations offering the check.
    ・Please present the confirmation email on your phone or tablet to receive your ticket(s).
  • Seats are limited for each tour.
  • Routes and timetables are subject to change.
  • Stops are fixed and cannot be changed .

・The Echigo-Tsumari Art Festival Passport is required for some artworks (sold separately).

・Each ticket is valid for only one course on the designated day.

Spring/Fall A Course

This course starts from the Tokamachi Station and features the House of Light and the Museum of Picture Book Art among others. The course goes around the Tokamachi and Kawanishi areas.

Dates: Sundays and public holidays during the spring/fall season.
Check-in Location: Tokamachi Tourist Association
Itinerary:
10:00am – Depart from Tokamachi Station, West Entrance.
10:15am to 10:30am – Stop at The Tanaka Fumio Library (T201). Artworks include “Light of the World, Light of the Intelligence II” (T200) by Kang Airan and “Time of Farm Tools” (T428) by Kawaguchi Tatsuo.
10:35am to 10:55am – Stop at the Center of Effective and Friendly Use of Snow. Artworks include “Exploring consciousness at nature” (T431) by Ihashi Arisa and “We like to watch clumsy-seeming Mountains” (T430) by Mapped to the Closest Address (open only during fall tours). Public restrooms are available here.
11:10am to 11:30am – Stop at “House of Light” (K005) by James Turrell.
11:55am to 12:25pm – Stop at “Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art” (T173) by Tashima Seizo. Public restrooms are available here.
12:45pm – Return to the Tokamachi Station, West Entrance.

Spring/Fall B Course

This course leaves from the Tokamachi Station travels around the Nakasato and Tsunan Town areas, including visits to the Echigo-Tsumari Kiyotsu Soko Museum of Art (SoKo for short), the Ryugakubo Waste Aquarium, For Lots of Lost Windows, and more.

Dates: Sundays and public holidays during the spring/fall season.

Itinerary:
2:10pm – Depart from Tokamachi Station, West Entrance.
2:25pm to 2:40pm – Stop at the Doichi Station “Kiss & Goodbye” (T325) by Jimmy Liao.
3:05pm to 3:20pm – Stop at the “Ryugakubo Waste Aquarium” (M079) by Kaji Seiya.
3:55pm to 4:15pm – Stop at the Echigo-Tsumari Kiyotsu Soko Museum of Art (SoKo) (N072). Public restrooms are available here. Participants may also leave the tour here if desired.
4:25pm to 4:35pm – Stop at “For Lots of Lost Windows” (N028) by Utsumi Akiko.
5:00pm – Stop at the Museum on Echigo-Tsumari (MonET) (T025). Public restrooms are available here. Participants may end their tour here and enter the museum, as it is just a 10-minute walk from the station.
5:05pm – Return to the Tokamachi Station, West Entrance.

Spring/Fall C Course

This tour focuses on the Matsudai and Matsunoyama areas of the Art Field. Includes stops at Kyororo, The Last Class, Nunagawa Campus, and more.

Dates: Saturdays during the spring/fall season.

Itinerary:
2:25pm – Depart from Matsudai Station.
2:35pm to 2:55pm – Stop at Nunagawa Campus (D331). Public restrooms are available here.
3:05pm to 3:20pm – Stop at “Shedding House” (D143) by Kurakake Junichi and Nihon University College of Art Sculpture Course. Public restrooms are available here.
3:50pm to 4:10pm – Stop at “The Last Class” (Y052) by Christian Boltanski and Jean Kalman. Public restrooms are available here.
4:20pm to 4:50pm – Stop at the Kyororo Natural Science Museum (Y019). Public restrooms are available here.
5:05pm – Stop at Matsudai Station. Public restrooms are available here. Participants may also end their tour here.
5:10pm – Return to Nohbutai.

About the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2022 runs from April 29th to November 13th for a total of 145 days. The entire area is larger than all 23 of Tokyo’s wards together and is filled with over 300 pieces of artwork, with over 200 them permanent exhibits.
